In a heartfelt and jaw-dropping gesture that stunned the college basketball world, Duke legend JJ Redick has donated his entire $12.2 million earnings from a recent media deal to his alma mater — funding a major renovation project for a new state-of-the-art basketball stadium.
The former Blue Devils sharpshooter and current ESPN analyst made the announcement during a live segment on NBA Countdown, drawing praise from fans, players, and Duke alumni across the country.
“Duke’s pride lives in me forever,” Redick said emotionally. “This isn’t about cement or seats — it’s about legacy, family, and investing in the future of a place that shaped every part of who I am.”
The funds will go toward a complete modernization of the historic Cameron Indoor Stadium, including updated seating, enhanced locker room and training facilities, and technology upgrades designed to keep Duke basketball at the forefront of the college game.
A Full-Circle Moment
Redick, who starred at Duke from 2002–2006 and still holds the program’s all-time scoring record, has long been one of the most visible and loyal ambassadors for the university. He’s consistently credited legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski and the Duke community with fueling both his NBA career and post-playing success.
“What JJ just did is nothing short of extraordinary,” said new Duke head coach Jon Scheyer. “It sends a powerful message to every recruit, every fan, and every student — that once you’re a Blue Devil, you’re family for life.”
Reactions Pour In
Within minutes of the announcement, tributes began flooding in across social media. Coach K called it “a shining example of what leadership and gratitude look like.” NBA players past and present praised Redick’s selflessness, and Duke fans launched the hashtag #ThankYouJJ, which trended nationally on X (formerly Twitter).
Duke’s athletic department confirmed that construction on the new stadium upgrades will begin in the offseason, with a target completion date ahead of the 2026–27 campaign.
“I’ve played in arenas all over the world,” Redick added, “but nothing has ever felt like home the way Cameron did. It’s time the next generation gets something even more special.”
