In a powerful gesture of compassion and leadership, Vancouver Canucks captain and star defenseman Quinn Hughes has personally invested $7.5 million to transform his Vancouver-area home into a dedicated shelter for homeless youth, the team confirmed Wednesday.
Hughes, widely recognized for his elite skill on the ice, is now being celebrated just as much for his heart off it. The shelter, which will be named “Quinn’s Place,” will serve as a safe haven for at-risk and homeless youth in Vancouver, offering not only housing but also access to mental health services, educational support, and career development programs.
“This city welcomed me with open arms,” Hughes said in an emotional statement. “It’s important to me that I give back in a way that truly helps. Every young person deserves a chance — a real shot — at stability, dignity, and hope.”
Hughes has teamed up with local nonprofits and municipal officials to ensure the shelter is designed to address the most urgent needs of Vancouver’s unhoused youth population. Construction and renovation are already underway, with a planned opening set for early 2026.
Canucks management and teammates lauded their captain’s efforts, calling it an example of true leadership. “Quinn is the kind of person every city hopes their captain will be — not just a competitor, but a role model,” said GM Patrik Allvin.
