In a profound act of generosity and community leadership, San Diego Padres superstar third baseman Manny Machado has invested $7.5 million of his own funds to convert one of his personal properties into a state-of-the-art shelter for homeless youth in San Diego.
The initiative, announced early Tuesday, aims to provide housing, support services, mentorship, and educational resources for local youth facing homelessness and hardship. The facility, to be named “Manny’s Mission”, is expected to open in mid-2026 and will accommodate over 50 young people at a time.
“San Diego has become my second home,” Machado said in a statement. “This city and its fans have given me so much, and now it’s time for me to give something meaningful back. No kid should have to grow up without a roof over their head or someone who believes in them.”
Machado’s investment includes full funding for the property renovation, staffing, and long-term operations. He is working alongside several local nonprofits, mental health professionals, and city leaders to ensure the shelter provides a comprehensive and sustainable path toward independence for those it serves.
Padres manager Mike Shildt praised Machado’s efforts, saying, “This is what being a leader is all about. Manny is not just an MVP on the field — he’s showing he’s an MVP in life.”
