In a move that’s sure to energize the fanbase and bolster the pitching staff, the Houston Astros have officially reached a verbal agreement with franchise legend Billy Wagner to return to the team as a specialized pitching coach for the 2025 season, multiple sources confirmed to ESPN on Thursday.
The former seven-time All-Star and one of the most dominant left-handed closers in MLB history is expected to join the Astros’ coaching staff in a player development and bullpen advisory role, focusing on refining mechanics, boosting confidence, and helping restore consistency to a bullpen that has struggled at times this season.
“Billy Wagner is one of the fiercest competitors and most respected minds in baseball,” said Astros GM Dana Brown. “Having him back in Houston — not just as a legend, but as a mentor — is going to make a major difference for our young arms and veteran guys alike.”
Wagner, who spent nine of his 16 MLB seasons with the Astros, is widely considered one of the greatest closers of all time. He finished his career with 422 saves, a 2.31 ERA, and 1,196 strikeouts in just over 900 innings. Known for his explosive velocity and fearless approach on the mound, Wagner’s legacy has remained strong in Houston long after his retirement.
Now, he returns not in uniform, but in spirit — bringing decades of experience, sharp baseball IQ, and a no-nonsense attitude that many believe the current Astros bullpen can benefit from.
“This team means everything to me,” Wagner told ESPN in a brief phone interview. “If I can help these guys compete, get better, and represent Houston the right way, then I’m all in.”
While the deal is not yet finalized on paper, both sides have reportedly agreed on terms, and an official announcement and introductory press conference are expected within the week. Wagner is likely to be involved in game-day preparation, bullpen sessions, and mentoring younger relievers, particularly left-handers and those transitioning from starters to relief roles.
The move comes as the Astros continue to retool and adjust in the wake of injuries and inconsistency on the mound during the early stretch of the 2025 season. With veterans like Lance McCullers Jr. returning and top prospects emerging, Wagner’s return offers both a symbolic and strategic boost to a team determined to fight back into contention.
For Astros fans, it’s more than just a coaching hire — it’s the return of a hero.
