HBO Max has officially announced the release date for “The Underdog,” a highly anticipated sports documentary chronicling the life and legacy of Pittsburgh Steelers all-time great “Mean” Joe Greene. The film is set to debut exclusively on HBO Max on September 22, 2025, coinciding with the kickoff of the NFL’s Week 3 slate.
A central figure in the Steelers’ 1970s dynasty and a cornerstone of the legendary “Steel Curtain” defense, Joe Greene’s story goes far beyond his Hall of Fame stats. “The Underdog” explores his journey from humble beginnings in Temple, Texas, to becoming one of the most feared and respected players in NFL history.
“Joe Greene changed the culture of the Pittsburgh Steelers — and arguably the NFL — forever,” said director Antoine Fuqua, a Pittsburgh native himself. “This documentary is a celebration of his grit, his leadership, and the impact he had on and off the field.”
Featuring exclusive interviews with Greene, former teammates like Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris (archived), Jack Ham, and Mel Blount, as well as current NFL stars who credit him as a trailblazer, the film takes a deep dive into Greene’s intensity, work ethic, and leadership.
The documentary also revisits Greene’s iconic 1979 Coca-Cola commercial — which helped humanize his “Mean Joe” persona and became one of the most memorable advertisements in Super Bowl history. It further explores Greene’s post-retirement years as a coach and front-office executive, and his role in mentoring the next generation of Steelers stars.
“The Underdog” is as much about football as it is about identity, perseverance, and quiet strength, according to producers. It tracks Greene’s rise during a time of social and racial turbulence in America, and how he became a symbol of class and determination within a sport — and city — that demanded toughness.
Steelers fans, NFL historians, and football lovers will not want to miss this deep, emotional, and revealing profile of one of the game’s true legends.
“The Underdog” premieres September 22, 2025, exclusively on HBO Max.
