In a move that has baseball fans across the country buzzing, Netflix has officially announced the release of its newest sports documentary, “The Underdog” — a powerful tribute to Houston Astros legend Jim Wynn. The film is set to premiere globally on June 14, 2025, and promises to shed light on one of baseball’s most overlooked superstars.
Wynn, a 14-time All-Star and beloved Houston icon, was affectionately nicknamed “The Toy Cannon” — a nod to his compact frame and explosive power at the plate. Though he stood just 5’9″, Wynn launched 291 home runs during his career and earned a reputation as one of the game’s fiercest competitors during an era when Black players still faced immense adversity.
“The Underdog” is more than just a baseball story — it’s a story about perseverance, dignity, and quiet greatness,” said director Ryan Coogler, known for his work on Creed and Black Panther. “Jim Wynn’s legacy deserves to be remembered, not just for what he did on the field, but for the grace with which he carried himself off it.”
The documentary will feature never-before-seen footage, archived interviews, and emotional commentary from teammates, historians, and Wynn’s family. Appearances from MLB legends such as Dusty Baker, Reggie Jackson, Craig Biggio, and Derek Jeter help paint the full picture of a man whose contributions to the sport went far beyond the stat sheet.
Wynn, who played the bulk of his career with the Houston Astros from 1963 to 1973, was a foundational figure for the franchise and a trailblazer in the league. Despite his incredible production, he was often overlooked by national media, making this long-overdue spotlight all the more significant.
Astros owner Jim Crane released a statement, calling the documentary “a monumental tribute to a true legend of our organization and our city.”
Fans can expect a deeply personal and inspiring story, with the film covering not just Wynn’s playing days, but also his advocacy work, mentorship to young athletes, and quiet battle with health issues in later life. Wynn passed away in 2020 at the age of 78, but his legacy lives on — now immortalized on screen.
“The Underdog” premieres June 14, 2025, exclusively on Netflix.
Mark your calendars — this is one sports documentary you won’t want to miss.
