In a surprising turn of events, the NFL has issued a $250,000 fine to the Denver Broncos and a $100,000 personal fine to defensive coordinator Vance Joseph following a controversial prank involving a phone call to quarterback Bo Nix during the 2025 NFL Draft.
According to league sources, the fine stems from a prank call made by Vance Joseph’s son, who reportedly impersonated a team representative and contacted Bo Nix as he awaited his official draft selection. The call created momentary confusion and sparked widespread conversation after footage of the incident surfaced on social media.
Although the call was described by those involved as “harmless fun,” the NFL determined it was a violation of professional conduct and disruptive to the integrity of the draft process.
“The NFL holds its member clubs and personnel to the highest standard during league events,” the league stated in its ruling. “Even actions meant as jokes can undermine the professionalism and seriousness of the draft for prospects and their families.”
Bo Nix, who was visibly confused at the time of the call, has not publicly addressed the incident. He was eventually selected and is now focused on preparing for his NFL debut.
In response to the disciplinary action, the Denver Broncos released a formal apology, expressing regret over the situation and reaffirming their commitment to upholding league standards.
Vance Joseph also issued a personal statement:
“It was an unfortunate lapse in judgment, and I take full responsibility for what happened. The call was not meant to harm or embarrass anyone, especially a young man like Bo Nix, who worked hard to reach this moment.”
While the prank did not ultimately impact Nix’s draft status, the league’s swift response signals a clear message: there is no room for unprofessional conduct during one of the NFL’s most important events.
