In a move sure to excite football fans across the country, Netflix has officially announced the release of its newest sports documentary, “The Underdog”, spotlighting the incredible life and career of Pittsburgh Steelers legend Terry Bradshaw — the Hall of Fame quarterback and 4-time Super Bowl champion who helped build a dynasty in the Steel City.
The film is slated to premiere August 22, 2025, just ahead of the NFL regular season kickoff.
Directed by award-winning filmmaker Ezra Edelman (O.J.: Made in America), “The Underdog” explores Bradshaw’s journey from small-town Louisiana roots to becoming one of the most iconic quarterbacks in NFL history. With rare footage, candid interviews, and untold stories from teammates, coaches, and Bradshaw himself, the documentary promises a deep, emotional dive into the life of a man who was often underestimated — but never outworked.
“Terry Bradshaw was more than just a quarterback,” Edelman said. “He was an unlikely hero who changed the narrative in Pittsburgh and carved his name into NFL history through grit, heart, and unmatched leadership.”
Bradshaw, the No. 1 overall pick in the 1970 NFL Draft, endured early career struggles before leading the Steelers to four Super Bowl titles in six seasons (1974, 1975, 1978, 1979). Known for his rocket arm, clutch performances, and unshakable confidence, Bradshaw was a two-time Super Bowl MVP and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1989.
The documentary also explores Bradshaw’s post-football career as a TV analyst, entertainer, and country singer — highlighting how he reinvented himself and became a beloved figure off the field as well.
Netflix’s teaser reads:
“Before the bright lights, before the fame — there was just a kid with a cannon and a dream. This is the story of The Underdog.”
The Steelers organization has already given the film its blessing, with several franchise legends — including Mean Joe Greene, Lynn Swann, and Franco Harris (via archival footage) — contributing to the documentary.
Fans can expect a film that captures not just the football legend, but the human being behind the helmet — filled with emotion, humor, and inspiration.
