Just when Auburn basketball fans thought the offseason turbulence might be settling down, the program has been dealt another blow. Rising star Reed Trapp, one of the Tigers’ most promising young talents, has officially entered the NCAA transfer portal.
The news was confirmed Wednesday night, and sources close to the program say Trapp’s decision caught some within the program off guard. The loss marks yet another key departure for head coach Bruce Pearl, as Auburn now faces a growing list of exits this offseason.
Trapp, a versatile 6’6” guard/forward known for his high motor, smooth shooting stroke, and defensive tenacity, showed flashes of stardom in his freshman campaign. He averaged 8.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.6 assists in just under 20 minutes per game, earning praise as one of the most “specially gifted” young players on the roster.
“Reed is the type of player every coach loves,” Pearl said in a statement. “He works hard, plays the right way, and has a bright future ahead of him. While we’re disappointed to see him go, we support his decision and wish him nothing but the best.”
Trapp’s name entering the portal immediately drew interest from a slew of high-major programs. Early reports indicate that schools like Tennessee, Miami, and UConn are expected to pursue him heavily.
This latest development comes on the heels of other key offseason changes for Auburn, including the graduation of veterans and speculation about additional roster movement. While Pearl is known for his ability to reload quickly through the portal and on the recruiting trail, losing a high-upside player like Trapp stings — especially when the team is aiming to return to SEC and national contention.
With Auburn’s backcourt depth now a growing concern, all eyes will be on how the Tigers adjust and what names they target to help fill the void left by Trapp.
