The New York Mets have made a strategic addition to their bullpen by signing veteran left-handed reliever A.J. Minter to a two-year, $22 million contract, with an opt-out option after the 2025 season.
Minter, 31, brings a wealth of experience from his tenure with the Atlanta Braves, where he served both as a setup man and closer, compiling a 3.28 ERA and 422 strikeouts over 348 2/3 innings.
Minter underwent season-ending hip surgery in September 2024 to address multiple issues that had hindered his performance, including a noticeable drop in pitching velocity. Despite these challenges, the Mets are optimistic about his recovery and potential impact. Recently, Minter faced hitters for the first time since his surgery, marking a significant step in his rehabilitation process. While his readiness for Opening Day remains uncertain, Minter emphasizes a cautious approach to ensure a full recovery, stating that he aims to avoid past mistakes of rushing back from injuries.
Minter’s addition is anticipated to provide the Mets with a versatile and experienced bullpen option, potentially serving as a sneaky weapon in high-leverage situations. As he continues his rehabilitation, the Mets and their fans remain hopeful that Minter will return to his previous form and contribute significantly to the team’s success in the upcoming season.
