‘Huge setback’: Two major obstacles that could prevent a Matt LaFleur’s favorite from getting defensive coordinator job…

The Green Bay Packers are currently on the hunt for a new defensive coordinator, following the departure of Joe Barry. Amidst speculation about potential candidates, one name that has consistently surfaced as a contender is Ejiro Evero, the current defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers.

Interestingly, Evero was a candidate for the Packers’ defensive coordinator position in 2021 but lost out to Joe Barry. With Barry no longer in the picture, the possibility of Evero joining the Packers coaching staff seems to be back on the table. However, there are significant obstacles that could hinder this potential hire.

Firstly, Evero has expressed interest in a promotion within the Carolina Panthers organization. He recently completed his second interview with the Panthers, indicating a desire for career advancement within the team. Given the choice between becoming the defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers or securing a head coaching position in Carolina, Evero’s preference might be inclined towards the latter.

Furthermore, there is a historical element that could impact Evero’s chances with the Packers. Reports suggest that Matt LaFleur, the head coach of the Green Bay Packers, preferred Joe Barry over Evero in the 2021 search for a defensive coordinator. This historical preference by LaFleur could potentially affect Evero’s candidacy for the role this time around.

Even if Evero does not secure the head coaching position in Carolina, there’s an additional hurdle to clear. The new head coach of the Panthers might have the authority to block Evero from interviewing for a lateral position, such as the defensive coordinator role with the Packers, if Evero is retained as the Panthers’ defensive coordinator.

In the 2023 season, Evero showcased his defensive prowess with the Panthers, contributing to the team’s respectable performance despite offensive challenges. While the Panthers ranked 29th in points allowed per game, their defense stood out, ranking fourth in total defense.

As the Packers navigate the process of appointing a new defensive coordinator, the potential obstacles involving Evero’s aspirations in Carolina and historical coaching preferences add layers of complexity to the decision-making process for Matt LaFleur and the Packers organization.
